I hope you enjoy tonights Podcast Episode 1 – Curiosity. Below is some of the transcript from the show.

When it comes to relationships we all go through the same stages, before we completely immerse ourselves into that relationship. Our customers feel the same way.

Let me set the scene…

You’re at your best friends house for a dinner get together. For some reason your friend thinks getting all of their friends together, who have never met, is a great idea! This is always a risky move.

But tonight of all nights, it’s coming up to 6 months since your recent breakup and being around a bunch of people you don’t know isn’t that appealing.

Turns out though, the meal was great, everyone is laughing and joking around and you find yourself having a good time. You notice someone across the table and two people down that stops you in your tracks.

WHY? There’s just something about the way they talk, tell jokes, their mannerisms it intrigues you. You find your curiosity is piqued!

So you lean in, pay more attention to them. You want to know more about this person. You’re not sure why but you do. This person just seems to resonate with you.

Next minute you find yourself asking them questions to discover more about them, it’s almost a reflex action. You find yourself asking, Who is this person? Why do you want to know more about them AND how can you get to know more?

I’m confident that we have all been in this situation or similar – where someone has piqued your curiosity. Whether it was an attraction, in business or in any other situation your curiosity has been piqued.

That’s the first stage of any relationship and it’s important to remember that our customers go through that exact process when they come across a product or service they need. They are CURIOUS first.

I know if my curiosity is piqued, I am going to think about that thing, person or product for a while.

The issue is though, we get bombarded with so many things that make us curious these days that it’s overwhelming. So we usually make snap decisions and scan our surroundings putting things into two buckets – Junk & Look at Later. That ‘s called our curiosity filter.

This is how our customers’ brains are working also. Remember our customers are scanning up to 3000 pieces of marketing collateral every single day.

Between Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn Television or direct mail (yes they still exist) your customer is seeing SO much, almost too much to handle.

The harsh truth is an overwhelming amount of material is discarded – I mean how could it not?

It’s perfectly healthy to do that because at the end of the day we are all doing what we can to live a meaningful life right? So not everything is going to be useful to us. I know this may sound to down to earth, but believe me, it’s quite healthy.

Humans are primates, right? We have natural instincts, we collect things to help us survive in the world. Just like our animal counterparts, we collect physical, emotional and social resources that help us live a better existence.
